Background. Social comparison theory was first proposed in 1954 by psychologist Leon Festinger and suggested that people have an innate drive to evaluate themselves, often in comparison to others. As she evaluates her skills and progress, she will compare her performance to other students in the class.
There are certain moderators to the social comparison that impact their effects, such as self-esteem levels and moods. If one has high confidence when they engage in comparisons, they are more likely to compare upward than downward, and the effect will be positive. Two studies examined the rela- tionship between frequent social comparisons and destructive emotions and behaviors. In Study 1, people who said they made frequent social comparisons were more likely to expe- rience envy, guilt, regret, and defensiveness, and to lie, blame others, and to have unmet cravings.
These comparisons can stress us, however, as we may find ourselves lacking when we make upward social comparisons. We may come off as conceited or competitive when we make downward social comparisons, which can create stress in our relationships.

— Social comparison refers to self-evaluation against other people. When people are outperformed by peers in a domain relevant (irrelevant) to them, it negatively (positively) affects how they evaluate themselves, compared to an ir- relevant (relevant) domain.
The self-concept and self-esteem are determined in large part through social comparison. When we are able to compare ourselves favorably with others through downward social comparison, we feel good about ourselves. Upward social comparison with others who are better or better off than we are leads to negative emotions.
Festinger (1954) proposed that social comparison was driven by a need to evaluate ourselves so that we had more information about ourselves; however, more recent theory suggests that social comparison is motivated by three drives (Gibbons & Buunk, 1999): Self-evaluation. Obsessive Comparison Disorder is a phrase I’ve coined to describe our compulsion to constantly compare ourselves with others, producing unwanted thoughts and feelings that drive us to depression, consumption, anxiety, and all-around joyous discontent.
