Clannad After Story shifted from episodic comedy to more focused sentimentality before descending into utter sadness over the course of 24 episodes. This approach was successful because it made people feel like they were part of Tomoya’s life.
Well, it’s definitely the trip that makes him the saddest. In other anime, sad moments often happen with our cast overreacting to make it sadder. You’re supposed to care about the cast, but they’re often underdeveloped, so you really don’t feel any connection.

I remember in the Clannad anime, Kotomi was upset after witnessing a bus accident that sadly reminded her of the death of her late parents. in a plane crash. So her friends tried to comfort her and take her home afterwards. So honestly, yeah, I can definitely relate to his tragic backstory more easily than others.
